12/30/2012 6:18:00 AM 'Cash mob' at Subway Owner attributes community generosity to 'the giving spirit'
During the dinner rush, every single customer who used the drive-through at the New Castle Subway sandwich shop ib Saturday paid the bill for the person behind him or her. (David Burns/ C-T Photo) BY DONNA CRONK email@example.com Sandy Morgan has worked in the fast-food business for 15 years but she's never seen anything like what happened last Saturday.
For about one hour, during the dinner rush, every single customer who used the drive-through at the New Castle Subway sandwich shop paid the bill for the person behind him or her. That amounts to about 30-35 customers. "Everybody who was here was just kind of stunned that it happened," Morgan says. It wasn't a flash mob, exactly but more like a cash mob. Then when the last two customers came through during that rush period, one said there was no one behind him to pay for so he gave the clerk $8 and told her to apply it to the bill of the next person who drove through. The other final customer of the hour handed the staff $13 and told them to buy themselves some drinks and cookies. Because the staff does not have to pay for beverages, the crew decided to use the money to treat the next customers who showed up. "A lot of people have been really kind lately," Morgan says. Store owner Sandy Maple said it was a pay-it-forward kind of thing that is sometimes seen in a feel-good story on the national TV news. "It just gave me cold chills," she said. "People in town would really like to know that kind of thing happens. We've had people do it (pay for others) before but not to this extent." Maple said "I think it was the giving spirit" and the Sandy Hook shootings were on people's minds. "I think they are saddened and they want to show there is kindness in the world and not just evil." The spontaneous giving was over within an hour and left Maple inspired. "It made me want to go out and do something. I wish I had thought of that."
