MIDDLETOWN - Little savings add up, and Shenendoah Schools Superintendent Ron Green said even an insurance premium reduction helps in these tough times of property tax caps.
Green recommended at Monday's school board meeting continuing property insurance through the district's current carrier, Indiana Insurance and Accident Fund, rather than switching to a company with a slightly lower bid.
"Staying with the same carrier ensures stability and continuous coverage," Green said. Total premiums paid in 2013 for the district were $117,860, and for the same coverage in 2014, the cost was $111,972, Green reported to the board.
"That's a savings of $5,888," Green said. "I feel really good about that. We must be fiscally prudent with all our funds."
Board members approved including sixth-grade participants in the Shenendoah Middle School cheerleading program. Middle School Cheer Coach Libby Powell expressed pleasure at the decision.
"The coaches are very excited for the opportunity to further develop the cheerleading program at Shenendoah," Powell said.
In other board action, Green announced the district's financial update, and the board voted unanimously to approve all year-end fund transfers. Board members signed off on the technical re-adoption of the 2014 budget necessitated earlier this year by a reporting glitch. Green recommended that the board explore emergency ice and snow removal options. The board accepted the resignation of sixth grade girls basketball coach Thom Zimmer.
Shenendoah's graduation date will be June 1, 2014. The ceremony is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
The next regular board meeting is slated for Jan. 13, 2014, at Shenendoah's administrative office, 5100 N. Raider Road, Middletown.
