1/22/2013 9:15:00 AM Mary Catherine (Hiatt) O'Dell
Mary Catherine (Hiatt) O'Dell, 89, of New Castle, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at Glen Oaks Health Campus. She was born Jan. 22, 1923, in New Castle, Ind., to the late Marion Edgar and Marie (Diekman) Hiatt.
Mary Catherine was an active girl for 14 years. Then she was stricken with polio. She spent nine months in Riley Hospital, underwent therapy and was unable to attend school for two years. But she picked up her life and went on. When she went back to high school, an acquaintance from childhood whose name was Ben O'Dell, came back into her life and was almost constantly at her side helping her. He took her to the high school games, where it was arranged for them to have easily accessible down front seats. That led to a wonderful marriage of 66 years, ending with Ben's death in 2011.
Mary Catherine graduated from New Castle High School in 1943. She was a local representative for Good Will Industries in the '50's and '60's, taking care of calls, making out tickets and routing trucks that made monthly visits to New Castle to pick up articles for delivery to Indianapolis. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and was presented with a certificate at the 2010 Centennial Celebration for being a member of the church for the most number of years. She enjoyed watching the Colts and Indiana basketball. She also enjoyed traveling and visited many places in the United States with her husband.
Survivors include, four nieces, Carole Hiatt and Gail Engle both of New Castle, Deloris Puckett of Muncie, and Sharon Harris of Huntington; a sister in law, Dorothy Hiatt of New Castle; four cousins, Lou Anna Van Zant and Rex (wife Terri) Van Zant both of New Castle, Scott Van Zant of Pittsburg, Pa., and Carl Diekman, Jr. of California; and special friends, Ron and Cathy Lowe of New Castle.
She was preceded in death by, her husband and a niece, Diana Crussore.
