Carolyn Sue (Gard) Cooper

Carolyn Sue (Gard) Cooper, 73, of New Castle, passed away on the evening of Tuesday, January 9, 2018 in her home surrounded by her loving family following a lengthy but courageous battle with cancer.

Carolyn was born April 8, 1944 in Mooreland, Indiana, a daughter of the late Kenneth Edgar “Shorty” and Frances Cathlene (Murray) Gard.

She graduated from Mooreland High School in 1962 and married the love of her life, Cecil Cooper, on August 22, 1965. Carolyn was a homemaker and loved spending time with her family. She was an avid bowler and was inducted into the Henry County Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Carolyn served as secretary of several bowling leagues for over 40 years. She greatly enjoyed state bowling tournaments with the girls, fishing and camping. She was an avid collector of puppy dog and eagle figurines. Carolyn greatly enjoyed spending time at the Mooreland Fair with her brothers and their Red Hot Rhythm Band.

Carolyn is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 52 years, Cecil Cooper; a son, Ken (wife: April) Cooper of New Castle; a daughter, Edna C. “Cathy” Hildebrandt of Roscoe, IL; three grandchildren, Kenneth “James” Hildebrandt, Erica Cooper and Jared Cooper; three step-grandchildren, Brian Cook Jr., Scott A. Cook and Derek S. Cook; two brothers, Gary Gard of Mooreland and Gerald “Buck” (wife: Betty) Gard of New Castle; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jacque Gard of Mooreland, Lyle (wife: Carol) Cooper of Fortville, Darlene (husband: Sonny) Westfelt of Chattanooga, TN, Joyce (husband: Bobby) Dick of Mooreland and Larry (wife: Alice) Cooper of Nashville, TN and many cousins, nieces and nephews including her special caregivers, Carmen Orr, Nikki Daffron and Rachel Burns.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica D. Cooper; two brothers, Kenneth Eugene “Gene” Gard and George P. “Muscles” Gard, Sr; a sister-in-law, Darlene Gard; three nephews, Jared Dean Dick, Tony Ray Westfelt and Alan D. Gard and her in-laws, Claude and Edna Cooper.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Sproles Family Funeral Home with Rev. Matthew Daffron officiating. Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 - 8 pm on Monday at the funeral home.
