CONNERSVILLE - The New Castle High School gymnastics team traveled southeast Tuesday night for its first meet of the season and were edged by the host Spartans 98.75-94.05 in Spartan Bowl.

Despite the narrow loss, the visiting Trojans did have some good performances.

For New Castle in Vault, Samantha Ward placed second, Riley Smith fourth, Bailey Guffey sixth, and Sarah Maddy eighth. On Uneven Bars for the Trojans, Samantha Ward was fifth, Skylar Black seventh, and Riley Smith eighth.

On Balance Beam for New Castle, Riley Smith finished second, Bailey Guffey fourth, Sarah Maddy fifth, Skylar Black seventh, and Samantha Ward eighth. In Floor Exercise for the Trojans, Riley Smith placed second, Samantha Ward fifth, and Skylar Black eighth.

New Castle had three gymnasts compete in the All-Around. There, Samantha Ward placed sixth, Riley Smith seventh, and Bailey Guffey ninth.

“I was very pleased with our season opener,” New Castle Coach Tina Hittson stated. “We are a young team and I saw a lot of good skills in our first meet. Our All-Around scoring was led by two freshmen, Riley Smith and Samantha Ward. The team had a well-rounded meet with scoring from Bailey Guffey, Sarah Maddy, and Skylar Black all adding to the team score. Now that our first meet is complete, we can begin working on adding to our routines and increasing our difficulty.”

The Trojan gymnasts travel to Rushville Monday for their next meet.
