YORKTOWN—The New Castle High School boys golf team continued its successful season Saturday when it traveled to Fall Creek Golf Course in Pendleton and won the Hoosier Heritage Conference Tournament by two strokes over runner-up Yorktown.

Team scores were New Castle 310, Yorktown 312, New Palestine 323, Mt. Vernon (Fortville) 325, Greenfield-Central 328, Pendleton Heights 337, Delta 360, and Shelbyville 406.

"It was a very cold and damp day in Pendleton," stated New Castle Coach John Burdsall. "We started on the back nine and it did not look good for a long period of time. A few of our players really struggled on the back nine where we started, but they did not give up and played better on the front nine."

New Castle freshman Dillon Bergum tied Greenfield's Noah Mohler for co-medalist of the meet, as both shot a 73. Trojan freshman Derek Tabor tied for third place with Yorktown's Carson Orr, as both carded a 75.

"What can I say about Dillon Bergum and Derek Tabor?," Remarked Burdsall. "Both played really well all day and could have even shot better if some of their putts would have gone in. Dillon was co-medalist of the meet even though he got beat in a one-hole playoff against a senior from Greenfield. And Tabor shot a very consistent 75 and would have been lower if some putts would have gone in."

New Castle senior Brady Wheeler shot a 79 and tied for eighth place with Mt. Vernon's Haiden Rose.

"Brady Wheeler really got it together after shooting a 44 on the back nine," Burdsall noted. "He played very well and shot a 35 on the front nine. He could have easily given up but he stuck in there and posted a good 79 score after his 44 on the opening nine.

Tying for sixth place with a 76 apiece were Quinn Dobbins of New Palestine, Sam McWilliams of Mt. Vernon, and Alex Bratton of Delta. All of the players above, including Bergum, Tabor, and Wheeler, earned All-Conference honors.

Rounding out the top four for the Trojans and contributing to the team score was senior Nolan Beam, who shot an 83. Spencer Stewart was New Castle's fifth golfer and shot 84.

"Nolan really hung in there all day," Burdsall added. "Even though he was not playing his best, he kept trying to play better. He never gave up and also finished strong. So at the end of the day, we did not play our best to win it but we ended coming up on top, so I was very happy."

The Trojans play against the second-place Tigers again Thursday at Yorktown and then will attempt to add more hardware to their trophy case in Saturday's New Castle Invitational at Westwood Golf Club.
