Memorial Day Parade details

By TRAVIS WEIK - tweik@thecouriertimes.com

The New Castle-Henry County Chamber of Commerce will once again honor local fallen veterans with the 2019 Memorial Day Parade.

Chamber Executive Director Shaun DuFault said 70 organizations have already registered to have walkers, vehicles and floats in the parade.

DuFault said groups and businesses can continue signing up for the parade until Wednesday, May 22.

It is free to be in the parade.

This year’s parade theme is “Always Remember!”

“Decorating your parade entry or float is encouraged and always a crowd pleaser,” DuFault said. “A $100 prize will be awarded for the Best Decorated float. Certificates will be awarded for the following: Best Theme; Most Patriotic; Vintage Auto; and Most Unique/Crowd Pleaser.”

Parade festivities begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27. The route begins at Broad and 15 Streets, will go south on Main Street, turn onto Bundy Avevue and proceed to Parkview Drive.

Floats can pass out candy and treats to people along the route. In the past, some businesses and churches have given out ice cream sandwiches, hot dogs, water bottles, beach balls and Frisbees.

The 2019 Memorial Day Parade is sponsored by First Merchants Bank.

The New Castle-Henry County Chamber of Commerce will also host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on the courthouse lawn at 9 a.m. before the parade starts.

“Guest speakers will share experiences as we memorialize and remember those who have served our country,” DuFault said.

The Chamber of Commerce has reserved special seating for former and current military personnel at the ceremony.
