Boys golf regional is today at The Players Club

New Castle senior Nolan Beam drives the ball off the tee toward hole No. 4 during Monday’s boys golf sectional at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield. Beam and his Trojan teammates won the sectional at Hawk’s Tail with a team score of 295 and play in today’s regional at The Players Club in Yorktown with the intent on reaching next week’s golf state finals in Carmel.

The New Castle High School boys golf team will be trying clear a hurdle that has bamboozled it the past several years — advance as a team to the IHSAA state finals out of the regional held at The Players Club in Yorktown, hosted by Muncie Central.

The Trojans will get their chance today, as they are one of 18 teams competing for the three team spots that would advance them to next week’s two-day state finals at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.

Judging by what the New Castle golfers said after they won Monday’s sectional at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield, just getting to the state finals as a team for another two days of play would be an excellent way to cap their season.

The Trojans have sent golfers to the state finals as individuals in recent past seasons. Current New Castle senior Brady Wheeler competed in the state finals in 2017 and 2018 as a sophomore and junior. But getting the entire team there has been the stumbling block.

The Trojans have a good chance to get to the state finals as a team this year, but a big challenge awaits them in this meat-grinder of a regional at The Players Club.

Advancing as teams from the Nowell sectional, held at Timber Ridge in Bluffton, are sectional champion Eastbrook (331), Norwell (334), and Bellmont (336). The medalist at Timber Ridge was Eastbrook’s Noah Ross with a 71.

Coming out of the Indianapolis Cathedral sectional, held at Maple Creek Golf Club in Indianapolis, are sectional champion Cathedral (285), Heritage Christian (311), and Indianapolis Chatard (351). Co-medalists at Maple Creek, both shooting a 68, were Cathedral’s Ryan Ford and Heritage Christian’s Drew Pickering.

Making it out of the Noblesville sectional, played at that city’s Purgatory Golf Course, are sectional champion Noblesville (293), Hamilton Southeastern (305), and Tipton (309). The medalist at Purgatory was Noblesville’s Clay Merchant with a 66.

Advancing to the regional from the Monroe Central sectional, held at Hickory Hills Golf Course in Farmland, are sectional champion Yorktown (315), Wapahani (330), and Muncie Central (330). Wapahani’s Caleb Wright was medalist at Hickory Hills with a 74.

New Castle won the Greenfield-Central sectional at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield with a 295 and the Trojans’ Derek Tabor was medalist with a 69. Other teams advancing to the regional from Hawk’s Tail are New Palestine (316) and Greenfield-Central (318).

Richmond won the sectional it hosted at Forest Hills Country Club with a 329 and the Red Devils’ Jake Miller was medalist with a 71. Other teams advancing to play today from the sectional at Forest Hills are Union County (338) and Centerville (352).

Tri’s Evan Murphy shot an 89 in the Richmond sectional on Monday and will be competing today as an individual at The Players Club.

Today’s action at The Players Club begins at 8 a.m. Admission is free, but spectators are warned to have only minimal conversation, such as encouragement and congratulations, with the golfers as they are competing.

The top three teams plus the top five individual golfers not on those three teams advance to next Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s state finals at Prairie View Golf Club.
