Knightstown's 'Jubilee Days' here again

By DARREL RADFORD - dradford@thecouriertimes.com

It was 1949. RCA perfected a system for color television. The average price for a new house was just under $8,000. The first Polaroid camera was sold.

And in the midst of all this progress, some civic leaders got together in Knightstown to stage the very first “Jubilee Days.”

Some 70 years later, televisions have gone digital, new homes have increased by a couple of decimal places and digital cameras are now the norm.

But every June, “Jubilee Days” proves to be a tried and true reason for Knightstown residents and their neighbors to come together for food, fellowship and fun.

This year’s event is scheduled from Wednesday, June 12 through Saturday, June 15 on the town square.

Special ride discounts, merchant deals

Knightstown Chamber of Commerce President Kelley Millhoan said special arm bands for amusement rides will be $15 on Wednesday and Thursday, a lower price than charged on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, business on the town square will be open during Jubilee days.

“The Burch Tree and Los Charros D & G Mexican grill and bar are coming up with specials just for the occasion. Make sure to check them out as well as the other unique shops along U.S. 40,” Millhoan said.

Music

The American Legion Post 152 will have bands on Wednesday night (Wiggins x2) and Saturday (Lee Whitman Band) from 7-11 p.m. and dinner specials both evenings.

Honors, contests

Community spirit will be in full swing before Jubilee Days begins, as the annual Chamber of Commerce “Citizen of the Year” Banquet is held Monday, June 10, at Knightstown High School.

That community spirit will develop a royal flair as Jubilee Days starts on Wednesday with the annual queen contest at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Candidates vying for this year’s crown were featured in Friday’s edition of The Courier-Times.

“Oooohs,” “cooos” and “awwws” will fill the air on the Academy Apartments grounds at 10 a.m. Saturday for the baby contest.

Jubilee Days excitement will literally march into hearts during Saturday’s parade. The line-up starts at 11 a.m. with the parade beginning at noon.
