Rules, entry details about Henry County Open Show

Henry County residents are invited to showcase their talents during the annual Henry County Open Show, Monday-Wednesday, July 15-17 in the Smith Building in Memorial Park.

Categories are open to all who live in the county who are age post-high school and/or 4-H alumni age or who are members of the county Extension Homemakers. Exhibitors may enter regardless of sex, race or religion. Each person may enter as many categories as they want. Entry fee is $2 for an unlimited number of entries. Articles made for competition must have been made within the last two years and be the work of the exhibitor.

Every precaution will be taken to insure safety of articles. Management is not responsible for lost or damaged articles. Exhibits should be brought with appropriate clear plastic coverings.

Prizes will be awarded as follows for each exhibit: first place, blue ribbon; second-place, red ribbon; and third-place, white ribbon. Overall People’s Choice Award, based on popular vote, will be awarded a special ribbon and monetary award. Food items will be judged separately and champions awarded with a monetary award.

Entries are to be brought to the W.G. Smith Building between 6-7 p.m. Sunday, July 14 or between 8-9:30 a.m. Monday, July 15. Closed judging will take place from 9:45-11:30 a.m. Items brought after 9:30 a.m. may be exhibited but will not be judged. Exhibits must be picked up between noon and 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 17.

Entries for Favorite Main Dish are to be brought in by 9 a.m. Monday, July 15. They will be judged immediately. Dishes will be released to exhibitors to take home at 10:30 a.m., if desired. Dishes cannot be kept over the course of the show due to perishable items. One piece of the food item will be displayed for 48 hours.

All unclaimed articles will become property of the Henry County Extension Homemakers, sponsors of the event, and will be disposed of by them.

Categories and sections:

Category 1 with recipes on 3x5-inch recipe cards: Pies (fruit or nut only), cakes,  favorite main dish, cookies, candy, quick breads, yeast breads.

Category 1 items opened while judged: jams and jellies.

Category 1 items not opened to judge: food preservation, fruits; food preservation, vegetables and food preservation, other.

Category 2: Plate of produce (exhibit three of the same item); basketry; photography (size limit: 20 inches x 24 inches); scrapbooking (one or two pages only); crafts-general (not needlework); crafts-dolls; crafts-ceramics; recycling; woodworking; carving; gourds; jewelry and holiday crafts (any holiday). Painting and drawing items are to be framed and ready to hang, size limit 20 inches by 24 inches.

Category 3: Sewing construction (exhibit a garment); wearable art; quilts-hand quilted (crib size or larger); quilts-machine-quilted (crib size or larger); quilted items; needlework (other than cross stitch, knitting or crochet); counted cross stitch; dried or silk flower arrangement; live flower arrangement; wreaths; knitting; crochet and Christmas sewing projects.
