Fall schedules released for men's Trine tennis and IU-East golf

By DAVID RISLEY - drisley@thecouriertimes.com

College students soon will be trekking to college for another year, and athletes who are on some of those college or university teams will be engaged in competition in addition to hitting the books or maneuvering on the computer.

For men’s athletics at the collegiate level, tennis and golf primarily are spring sports, but there also is an abbreviated fall season for both.

Tri High School graduates Jimmy Jeffries and Clayton Becker are taking their tennis talent to Trine University in Angola and will play for the Thunder in several tennis matches from early September to early October.

Trine opens at home against Manchester on Sept. 4, which is the only match in Angola during the fall season.

The Thunder men’s team then takes to the road for matches at Bethel (Indiana) on Sept. 5, at Spring Arbor Sept. 12, at Anderson Sept. 15, at Grace Sept. 27, and ends the fall season Oct. 4 at the ITA Regional in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

IU-East in Richmond has three New Castle High School graduates on its roster, senior Kole Schofield and incoming freshmen Nolan Beam and Brady Wheeler. The Red Wolves’ men’s golf team had five tournaments or matches slated on their fall schedule.

IU-East opens at home on its Liberty Country Club home course with its IU-East Fall Tee-Off Friday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m. This is the Red Wolves’ only home event during the fall season.

Every other IU-East men’s golf meet this fall will be played on Mondays and Tuesdays away from Richmond. The first one is Sept. 23-24 at Spring Arbor University’s Bill Bockwitz Classic at Grande Golf Club in Jackson, Michigan.

On Oct. 7-8, the Red Wolves will compete in the River States Conference Fall Review at Belterra Resort in Florence, Indiana. the following week, Oct. 14-15, IU-East competes in the Shawnee State University Fall Invitational at Elks Country Club in McDermott, Ohio.

The Red Wolves’ men’s golf team will end its fall season Oct. 28-29 at the Alice Lloyd College Invitational on Nob North Golf Course in Cohutta, Georgia.
