Thalls announces retirement after 27 years

By TRAVIS WEIK - tweik@thecouriertimes.com

Henry County Council member Mike Thalls announced Wednesday that he will officially retire from public office Jan. 1, 2020.

He holds one of three At-Large seats on the seven-member council.

Thalls is currently in his seventh term on the Henry County Council. He was first elected in 1992 and voters picked him for office six more times.

Thalls announced his retirement plans in a letter to the Henry County Republican Party and the County Clerk’s office.

Thalls said the December county council meeting will be his last.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Henry County,” Thalls said.

Thalls had previously announced last September that this would be his final term and he would not seek re-election in 2020.

With the new announcement, Thalls will be leaving office with one year left on his term.

Chad Malicoat, vice chair of the Henry County Republican Party, said the local GOP precinct committees will have a caucus in January to fill Thalls’ council seat.
