The New Castle High School girls golf team opened its 2019 regular season Wednesday evening against visiting Hoosier Heritage Conference opponent Yorktown at Westwood Golf Club.
The Tigers, who wore the green shirts, defeated the Trojans 211-226.
Weather conditions for the season opener were rather good, a little warm but not too humid and with a light breeze blowing.
The Trojans have a rather young team this season with just four girls on the roster and no seniors. Last year’s No. 1 golfer Annie Gillock, who graduated this past spring and made the IHSAA state finals in 2018, was present on the course to cheer on her old teammates.
New Castle began the season with junior Macayla McGowan in the No. 1 spot, junior Faith Firle at No. 2, sophomore Lylah Hutson at No. 3, and sophomore Maggie Lewis at No. 4.
The final scores for the nine-hole meet followed form, as McGowan shot a 47 to become the medalist of the meet. Firle carded a 50, which was one stroke behind the runner-up medalist from Yorktown. Hutson shot a 64 and Lewis was one stroke back at 65 for the other two scores that figured into the team score.
“With the first meet jitters out of the way, we look to better our scores at the next meet this Friday evening with the Lady Bears of Shelbyville,” New Castle Coach Jill Leversedge remarked.
After Friday’s meet at Shelbyville, New Castle entertains Cambridge City Lincoln Monday evening at Westwood Golf Club. That meet with the Golden Eagles will be the final home meet for the Trojans for the rest of August, as they take to the road for seven straight meets or invitationals.
The first two of those are Wednesday against Shenandoah at Tri-County Golf Club and Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Lapel Invitational.
