Delta Kappa Gamma International awards scholarships

Delta Kappa Gamma, an international and local education honorary recently awarded two local high school graduates with scholarships.

The annual scholarship is given in recognition of young women pursuing an undergraduate degree in education who exemplify outstanding academic achievement.

Tri High graduate of 2017 and Ball State Honors student Mikayla McKellar was one of the recipients to receive a $500 scholarship. McKellar is a junior majoring in Mathematics and wants to become a high school math teacher.

McKellar is a member of the Ball State University Honors College and belongs to several campus organizations, including Kappa Delta Pi and the Pride of Mid-America Marching Band. She is a member of the Honors Colloquium, which is doing a field study in England next spring.

“I want to make a difference in the world,” McKellar said. “I want to be able to inspire students to reach their full potential and be successful in life.”

Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Caudill of Spiceland.

Lori Marie Thomas, a 2018 graduate of Knightstown High School, was the second recipient of the $500 scholarship award. Thomas is a sophomore at Indiana University East, majoring in Elementary Education.

In high school, Thomas was an active member in National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, basketball, soccer, track, Youth Group and 4-H. Thomas said she chose education as a career to inspire children to follow their dreams and aspirations and to accommodate all learning styles.

Her parents are Jason and Jana Thomas of Knightstown.

A short business meeting of Delta Kappa Gamma was conducted after brunch at Primo restaurant. Scholarship chairperson Bev Elliott presented the scholarships and certificates to the recipients. President Denise Estelle led the last meeting of the year. Estelle was presented a bouquet of roses in recognition of her service to the chapter

The next chapter meeting is 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at Stack’s, 510 S. Memorial Dr., New Castle.
