The New Castle High School girls golf team hosted Cambridge City Lincoln Monday evening at Westwood Golf Club and shot its best score of the season in defeating the Golden Eagles 213-244.

The Trojans improved to 1-2 in dual meets for the young season after a pair of losses to Hoosier Heritage Conference opponents. New Castle improved its team score by four strokes since last Friday’s match at Shelbyville.

“Tonight’s victory over the Lincoln Lady Eagles was a complete team effort with all four golfers scoring in the 50s or less,” New Castle Coach Jill Leversedge stated. “Congratulations to our girls on a much-improved team victory.”

The weather was pretty good for a golf meet during the dog days of summer. It had rained a bit earlier in the day, but no precipitation fell during the match and the humidity was tolerable.

The No. 1 golfers began at hole No. 5, No. 2 at hole No. 4 and so forth as the girls played the front nine on Monday.

New Castle was led by junior Macayla McGowan, who carded a 45 to claim medalist honors. Classmate Faith Firle was the meet runner-up medalist with a score of 54. The sophomore duo of Lylah Hutson and Maggie Lewis completed the team victory with scores of 58 and 56, respectively.

Lincoln had six girls competing Monday evening. Savannah Dungan was the Golden Eagles’ No. 1 golfer, Allison Frost No. 2, Shayna Morris No. 3, Lindsey Shrunk No. 4, and Erin Rader No. 5 with Ashley Wampler the lone junior varsity golfer.

No scores were received for the Cambridge City golfers.

New Castle takes to the road for seven consecutive meets, starting with Shenandoah today at Tri-County Golf Course followed by the Lapel Invitational on Saturday.
