John Wicker grew up in a musical family and joined band when he was in sixth grade.

“Music has always been a big part of my life, because my mom is a former band director and one of my greatest inspirations for becoming one too,” Wicker said.

The new band director of Tri Junior Senior High School grew up in Fishers, where he attended Riverside Middle School and Fishers High School.

“At both places, I was heavily involved with music activities,” Wicker said, “From jazz, pep and marching band to solo and ensemble contests to performing in some music groups like All-Region Band, Junior All State Band and the IMEA Honor Band.”

Wicker said those experiences as a student musician led him to want to major in music and teach that love to his future students.

He earned a bachelors in Music Education from Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

Wicker said he got into anything and everything related to music while he was at ISU. Sometimes, that meant working concessions for his music fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi or helping with the Jazz Festival. He was also in marching band and pep while in college.

“I always strived to bring the best to everyone in all activities I participated in and always would bring the most fun and enjoyment,” Wicker said. “That’s how I strive to be as a teacher at Tri as well.”
