Trojan volleyball goes 3-1 at Avon Invitational


AVON – The New Castle High School volleyball team will not go undefeated throughout the season, but it still could be unbeaten against teams from Indiana after competing in Saturday’s Avon Invitational.

The Trojans defeated three Class 4A teams from the state of Indiana in straight sets, but then took on powerful Assumption High School from Louisville, Kentucky in Saturday’s finale and went down in two sets.

New Castle is now 8-1 for the season, fell to No. 5 in the latest Class 4A poll, and is No. 4 in the state according to MaxPreps.

The Trojans took on Carmel in Saturday’s first match and defeated the Greyhounds 25-14, 25-19.

New Castle had 23 kills in the match, led by Mabrey Shaffmaster’s 12, Laila Smith five, Melani Shaffmaster three, Addy Bunner two, and Bailey Cox one.

The Trojans had 11 service aces, led by six from Mabrey Shaffmaster, Zoe Conway three, and Melani Shaffmaster and Bunner one apiece. Smith and Cox each had a block.

Among New Castle’s 20 digs, Mabrey Shaffmaster had six, Conway five, Cox four, Bunner three, and Melani Shaffmaster two. Melani Shaffmaster had 18 assists and Cox two.

The Trojans defeated Seymour 25-10, 25-15 in Saturday’s second match.

New Castle had 23 kills led by Mabrey Shaffmaster’s nine, Smith five, Melani Shaffmaster three, and Nicole Wilkinson, Bunner, and Cox two apiece.

The Trojans’ 14 aces were served by Conway and Cox with four apiece, Mabrey Shaffmaster three, Melani Shaffmaster two, and Emily Lamb one. Mabrey Shaffmaster and Wilkinson each had a block.

New Castle had 15 digs, led by Mabrey Shaffmaster five, Conway four, Melani Shaffmaster two, and Eliza Madden, Samantha Ward, Cox, and Bunner one apiece. Melani Shaffmaster had 13 assists, Conway two, and Madden two.

In their third match, the Trojans defeated Floyd Central 25-17, 25-10. Mabrey Shaffmaster had 12 of New Castle’s 26 kills, followed by Melani Shaffmaster six, Smith five, Cox two, and Wilkinson one.

The Trojans’ four service aces were posted by Melani Shaffmaster with two and Conway and Bunner one apiece. Mabrey Shaffmaster had five blocks, Melani Shaffmaster two, and Smith and Wilkinson one apiece.

New Castle had 25 digs against the Highlanders, led by Cox with nine, Mabrey Shaffmaster five, Melani Shaffmaster four, Conway and Bunner three each, and Ward one. Melani Shaffmaster had 19 assists and Cox one.

The Trojans fell to Assumption 24-26, 13-25 in their final match of the day.

New Castle had 25 kills, led by nine from Mabrey Shaffmaster, six apiece by Melani Shaffmaster and Smith, two from Wilkinson, and one each from Bunner and Cox. Melani Shaffmaster, Conway, and Cox had a service ace apiece. Melani Shaffmaster and Wilkinson each had a block. Among the Trojans’ 27 digs against Assumption, Melani Shaffmaster had 11, Mabrey Shaffmaster six, Cox five, Bunner three, and Conway and Ward one apiece. Melani Shaffmaster had 13 of New Castle’s 18 assists, Cox three, and Mabrey Shaffmaster and Conway one each.

The Trojans traveled to Shelbyville Tuesday night, host Greenfield-Central Thursday, and host the New Castle Invitational Saturday.
