Sign-ups For Youth Basketball League

Sign-ups now are underway for the 2019-20 New Castle Evening Optimist/Henry County YMCA Youth Basketball League. These sign-ups are at the Henry County YMCA or Sports Corner.

Any boy or girl living in New Castle, Henry County, or the surrounding area is eligible to participate. There will be a Boys Division for players in the fifth and sixth grades, and a Girls Division for players in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades.

Cost to participate is $70 per player, which includes uniform, league games, and the tournament. Financial assistance is available through the New Castle Evening Optimist Club.

There is a mandatory evaluation of players before the coaches of the teams draft them. The draft for the boys is Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m., and the draft for the girls is Thursday, Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Boys Soccer

Greenfield-Central 7, New Castle 0

The Trojan boys traveled a bit southwest Thursday night to end their regular season and fell to the host Class 3A No. 14 Cougars, who are the 2019 Hoosier Heritage Conference champions with a 7-0 record.

New Castle ended HHC play with a 2-5 record and is now 9-6-1 for the season. The Trojans’ goal keeper Andrew Glover finished the game with eight saves.

New Castle plays Delta Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Class 2A Sectional 24 at Yorktown.

Boys Tennis Sectional

Northeastern 4, Hagerstown 1

The Tiger boys lost to the Knights Thursday evening in the semifinals of the Richmond sectional. The host Red Devils defeated Centerville 4-1 in Thursday’s other semifinal and played Northeastern for the championship Friday evening.


Knightstown 3, Morristown 0

The Panthers hosted the Yellow Jackets Thursday night and swept past them in three sets 25-17, 25-9, 26-24.

Leaders for the Knightstown were Rena’ Witham with 11 kills, 14 digs, and three aces; Gwen Dyer with 30 assists, an ace, a block, a kill, and seven digs; Paige Personett with eight kills, two aces, a block, and three digs; Cara Mullen with 13 digs; Trinidie Newby with seven kills and a block; Avery Bever with four kills and three digs; Katie Clark with an ace and six digs; Sierra Heady with four kills; and Alicia Knapp and Josie Koehler with a kill apiece.

Knightstown 2, Morristown 0 (JV)

The Panther junior varsity defeated the visiting Yellow Jackets in straight sets Thursday evening 25-17, 25-18.

Leaders for the Knightstown were Josie Koehler with six kills, three aces, and a block; Taeler Mayhew with 13 assists and two aces; Katelyne Stephens with four kills, two assists, an ace, and three digs; Emilie Moss with a kill and three aces; Alicia Knapp with a kill and two digs; Reese McDonald with two kills and a dig; Grace Jones with two aces; and Kensi Cain with a kill and an ace.
