By DAVID RISLEY - drisley@thecouriertimes.com

INDIANAPOLIS - Pairings for the IHSAA volleyball state tournament were drawn Sunday night, and our six local teams now know the path they must take to get to Ball State's Worthen Arena for the state championship matches on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Our six local teams are in three different sectionals in a trio of different classes.

Class 4A Sectional 9 at New Castle

Two defending state champions are in this eight-team sectional. Class 4A No. 1 New Castle won the past two Class 3A state titles and has moved up a class die to the IHSAA's tournament success factor rule. Yorktown, last year's Class 4A state champion, also continues to play up one class due to the success factor rule.

Five Hoosier Heritage Conference teams and three from the North Central Conference compose the eight-team field.

In the opening round Tuesday, Oct. 15, Anderson faces Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in the first match, followed by Pendleton Heights facing Greenfield-Central in the second match.

In the opening round Thursday, Oct. 17, Yorktown takes on Muncie Central in the first match, followed by host New Castle playing Richmond in the second match.

Tuesday's winners will face each other in the first semifinal match Saturday, Oct. 19 while Thursday's winners will tangle in the second semifinal match that day. The sectional championship match between the two semifinal winners is that night.

The New Castle sectional champion will play the Lawrence Central sectional winner in the second semifinal match of the Class 4A Greenfield-Central regional Saturday, Oct. 26 after the sectional winners from Southport and Plainfield collide in the first semifinal. The regional championship match between the semifinal winners is that night.

The winner of the Greenfield-Central regional will play the winner of the Bloomington North regional for the Class 4A southern semi-state championship Saturday, Nov. 2 at either Columbus East or Jasper.

Class 2A Sectional 41 at Northeastern

This seven-team sectional features two schools from the Mid-Eastern Conference and five from the Tri-Eastern Conference, and includes a trio of local teams.

Eastern Hancock plays Shenandoah in the lone opening round match Tuesday, Oct. 15.

In the opening round Thursday, Oct. 17, Knightstown takes on Union County in the first match, followed by Centerville playing host Northeastern in the second match.

Three-time defending sectional champion Hagerstown plays the winner of Tuesday's Royals vs. Raiders match in the first semifinal match Saturday, Oct. 19 while Thursday's winners will tangle in the second semifinal match that day. The sectional championship match between the two semifinal winners is that night.

The Northeastern sectional champion will play the Sheridan sectional winner in the first semifinal match of the Class 2A Heritage Christian regional Saturday, Oct. 26 followed by the sectional winners from Cloverdale and Indianapolis Scecina colliding in the second semifinal. The regional championship match between the semifinal winners is that night.

The winner of the Heritage Christian regional will play the winner of the Forest Park regional for the Class 2A southern semi-state championship Saturday, Nov. 2 at either Columbus East or Jasper.

Class A Sectional 56 at Randolph Southern

Three schools from both the Mid-Eastern Conference and Tri-Eastern Conference plus private school Seton Catholic are in this seven-team field that includes two local teams.

Those two local teams, defending champion Blue River Valley and Tri, tangle in the lone opening round match Tuesday, Oct. 15.

In the opening round Thursday, Oct. 17, Union (Modoc) takes on host Randolph Southern in the first match, followed by Seton Catholic playing Union City in the second match.

The new entrant to this sectional, Cambridge City Lincoln, plays the winner of Tuesday's Vikings vs. Titans match in the first semifinal match Saturday, Oct. 19 while Thursday's winners will tangle in the second semifinal match that day.
