Sign-ups For Youth Basketball League

Sign-ups now are underway for the 2019-20 New Castle Evening Optimist/Henry County YMCA Youth Basketball League. These sign-ups are at the Henry County YMCA or Sports Corner.

Any boy or girl living in New Castle, Henry County, or the surrounding area is eligible to participate. There will be a Boys Division for players in the fifth and sixth grades, and a Girls Division for players in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades.

Cost to participate is $70 per player, which includes uniform, league games, and the tournament. Financial assistance is available through the New Castle Evening Optimist Club.

There is a mandatory evaluation of players before the coaches of the teams draft them. The draft for the boys is Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m., and the draft for the girls is Thursday, Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m.


Tigers Win Wayne Co. Tourney

Hagerstown hosted Saturday’s Wayne County Tournament and won its sixth straight county volleyball title to improve to 24-2 for the season.

The host Tigers defeated Centerville in their first match of the day 25-20, 25-6, 25-16. For Hagerstown, Regan Tinkle had 17 kills and Jessica Swimm had 16. Carli Morris had 13 digs and 10 service points; Camryn Bradway had nine digs and 12 service points; Tori Kelley had eight digs; and Halley Rogers had 39 assists and nine digs.

The Tigers defeated Northeastern in the championship match 25-8, 25-8, 25-10.

For Hagerstown in the title match, Regan Tinkle had 12 kills, 15 service points and six aces; Jessica Swimm had 16 kills; Hallie Rogers had 25 assists and six kills; Carli Morris had 12 digs; Ashley Vinson had 14 service points with five aces; Carli Cox had nine service points; and Tori Kelley had eight digs. 

The Tigers host Union County tonight, travel to New Castle on Wednesday, and will finish their regular season on Thursday at home for Senior Night against Centerville.

Junior High/Middle School Football

Tri 30, Cambridge City Lincoln 0

The Titan football team shut out the Golden Eagles Thursday evening for a TEC victory to improve to 2-4 for the season.

For Tri, Tyler Brooks scored two touchdowns on runs of 25 and 35 yards, and Titan fullback Cameron Boone ran over Lincoln to aslo add a pair of TDs on runs of 35 and 12 yards. Tri’s final touchdown of the night was Jayden Gorman’s 12-yard interception return of a pilfered Golden Eagle pass.

Defensively for the Titans, Brooks had a tackle-for-loss and a quarterback sack, Clayton Reno had a QB sack, Vance Dishman had a tackle-for-loss, and Boone had two tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery.
