Sign-ups For Youth Basketball League

Sign-ups are underway for the 2019-20 New Castle Evening Optimist/Henry County YMCA Youth Basketball League. These sign-ups are at the Henry County YMCA or Sports Corner.

Any boy or girl living in New Castle, Henry County, or the surrounding area is eligible to participate. There will be a Boys Division for players in the fifth and sixth grades, and a Girls Division for players in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades.

Cost to participate is $70 per player, which includes uniform, league games, and the tournament. Financial assistance is available through the New Castle Evening Optimist Club.

There is a mandatory evaluation of players before coaches of the teams draft them. The draft for the boys is Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m., and the draft for the girls is Thursday, Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m.


Lapel 3, Knightstown 2

The Panthers traveled a bit northwest Monday and fell in five sets to host Lapel on the Bulldogs’ Senior Night 11-25, 25-23, 8-25, 25-14, 8-15 to slip to a record of 19-10 for the season.

Leaders for Knightstown were Rena’ Witham with 11 kills, 27 digs, and four aces; Gwen Dyer with 23 assists, nine digs, and four blocks; Trinidie Newby with seven kills, two blocks, and an assist; Paige Personett with six kills, an ace, an assist, three digs; and two blocks; Cara Mullen with 12 digs and an ace; Avery Bever with three kills, three digs,and an ace; and Alyssa Northern with a kill, an assist, and three digs.

The Panthers hosted Eastern Hancock Tuesday for Senior Night.

Lapel 2, Knightstown 1 (JV)

The Panther junior varsity fell in three sets to the host Bulldogs Monday evening 18-25, 25-20, 12-15.

Leaders for the Knightstown JV were Taeler Mahew with 11 assists, an ace, and three digs; Alicia Knapp with two kills and two digs; Kensi Cain with two aces, two digs, and four kills; Josie Koehler with two kills, a block, and a dig; Katelyne Stephens with two kills and two aces; and Mallory Halcomb added six digs.
