Thumbs up to New Castle High School speech team member Katelyn Goodpaster for advancing to nationals this summer.

Thumbs up to Shenandoah High School senior Hillery Shepherd for being named First Team Academic All-State by the IBCA.

Thumbs up to Tamara Neal of Hagerstown for winning the “Designed For One!” cookbook by Nancy S. Hughes, and to Linda Rigney of New Castle for winning “The 12-Week Diabetes Cookbook” by Linda Gassenheimer. These were the latest Neighbors giveaways. The Courier-Times thanks all who entered the drawings!

Thumbs up to the McQueen family which has owned dry-cleaning businesses in New Castle since 1957 and with sadness, plans to close Convenient Cleaners at the end of March. All the best to retired co-founder, Betty McQueen and to current owner, her daughter-in-law, Jo McQueen. Their story is on today’s Neighbors page.

Thumbs up to the community volunteers and business donors who are always at the front of the line to give back to their neighbors and people they’ve never even met when the call goes out.

Thumbs up to the City of New Castle department heads, Mayor Greg York, the local Optimists and New Castle High School for putting on another successful Mayor For A Day event.

Thumbs down to losing an extra hour of sleep to the archaic practice of Daylight Saving Time.

Thumbs up to New Castle City Council member Aaron Dicken for organizing and hosting a recent meeting to share information about resources available for preserving the buildings in New Castle’s downtown historic district. We applaud Dicken for his leadership on this matter and are hopeful it provided some of the attendees with useful information they will put into action. Thumbs up as well to everyone who attended the meeting for their interest in preserving New Castle’s past.

Thumbs up to Cory Cook of Cook Family Investments for doing his part to save one of downtown New Castle’s historic buildings, 1414 Broad Street. As recently reported in The Courier-Times, Cook plans to renovate the facade of the structure and repair the roof to make sure it’s safe from wet weather. We’re hopeful a tenant will follow on the heels of the project’s completion.

Thumbs up to the New Castle High School boys basketball team for winning a sectional championship for the first time in 10 years.

Thumbs up to the Shenandoah High School boys basketball team for repeating as sectional champion in Class 2A Sectional 42.

Thumbs up to New Castle High School freshman gymnast Samantha Ward for qualifying to compete in the All-Around at the state finals out of the Connersville regional.
