PARP program set for Tuesday

By KEVIN GREEN - kgreen@thecouriertimes.com

Need to learn more about pesticide application? Reservations are still being accepted for an informational afternoon program that should be of interest to many area residents involved in agriculture.

The Henry County Extension Service is hosting a Henry County PARP program from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the W.G. Smith Building in Memorial Park, 2221 N. Memorial Drive, New Castle.

“This program has something to offer a wide audience,” Henry County Extension Director Justin Curley said. “We will be having the mandatory Dicamba update for all of those chemical applicators who plan to use Dicamba products this season. We also will have presentations on insect management and fungicide use in vegetable crops, so hopefully we’ll see some of the community’s backyard gardeners as well! Dr. Jason Ackerson will do a session on soil health that should appeal to a broad audience.”

Dr. Ackerson’s presentation is scheduled for 1 to 1:30 p.m.

Ricky Foster, a pest management, vegetable and fruit crops specialist, will present “Sound Insect Management Strategies for Vegetable Crops” from 1:30 to 2 p.m.

Daniel Egel, botany and plant pathology specialist for commercial growers, will present “Fungicide Use and Abuse in Vegetable Crops” from 2 to 2:30 p.m.

The program will conclude with Danny Starke, Office of Indiana State Chemist Specialist, who will present a program on Dicamba from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

“This is mandatory to attend for all those using Dicamba in 2018,” Curley said. “The program is good for both PARP credit as well as CCH in categories 1,14, RT. The afternoon of information will provide a wonderful educational opportunity for the community.”

The cost is $10 for the PARP credit.

Reservations may be made by contacting the local Extension office at 765-529-5002 or emailing either jcurley@purdue.edu or spfaff@purdue.edu.
