Local police warn of phone scams

Courier-Times Staff Report

The New Castle Police Department is warning area residents to not fall victim to recent phone scams circulating the area.

According to assistant police chief Justin Wardlow, some citizens have been called by scammers and asked to donate money to their local police department.

The New Castle Police Department does not solicit money over the telephone, Wardlow said, reminding people to never give away their personal information, including bank account, credit card and Social Security numbers.

Phone scams are very difficult to investigate and are often coordinated internationally, Wardlow cautioned.

The best way to avoid becoming a victim is to not give away personal information.

Residents who wish to report a phone scam or suspicious activity can do so by calling non-emergency dispatch at 765-529-4890. Select option number 1 on the automated prompt to speak to a dispatcher.
