Viking girls roll past Blackhawks in track & field

MOUNT SUMMIT - The Blue River Valley High School girls track & field team ran past visiting Cowan 92-30 Tuesday evening in a dual meet. The host Vikings won 12 of the 15 events and garnered several second and third-place finishes as well to improve to 2-0 this season.

Winning events for the Vikings were Brooke Taylor in shot put (27-3.25), Joslynn Witham in long jump (13-6) and the 100m hurdles (19.25 seconds), Alexis Whitinger in high jump (4-4), the 1600m run (6:48), and the 800m run (3:05.99), Maddie Griffin in the 100m dash (15.06), Mallory Cross in the 300m hurdles (59.60 seconds) and 200m dash (33.12 seconds), and Lauren Haas and Malory Polston, who tied for first in the 3200m run.

Also taking first place for Blue River were its 4x800m relay team of Haas, Taylor, Polston, and Ashley Ooten and the 4x400m relay team of Whitinger, Griffin, Brylee Kanouse, and Cross.

Other placings for the Vikings were Ooten second and Emma Claar third in long jump; Witham second in high jump; Saundra Spurlock third in the 100m hurdles; Stephany Redwine second and Angelina Grasse third in the 100m dash; Haas second and Polston third in the 1600m run; Griffin second and Kanouse third in the 400m dash; Witham second and Ooten third in the 300m hurdles; and Ooten second and Kanouse third in the 800m run.

No results for the Blue River boys in their meet against Cowan were made available before press deadline.

The Vikings will compete today at Union City against Wapahani, Seton Catholic, and the host Indians, and will be in the Small School Invitational Saturday at Randolph Southern.
