Viking girls first at Eastern Hancock

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Blue River Valley High School girls tennis team competed in the Eastern Hancock Invitational Saturday and finished in first place with 35 points. Jay County finished second, Seton Catholic third, and Eastern Hancock fourth.

In opening round singles play for the Vikings, Naomi Brewer defeated Eastern Hancock 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1; Rachel Snavely defeated Eastern Hancock 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2; and Haley Foster defeated Seton Catholic 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3; In opening-round doubles, Hannah Foster and Mallory Cross defeated Jay County 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 at No. 1, and Mindy Polston and Lindsey Williams defeated Seton Catholic 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.

In championship round singles for Blue River, Naomi Brewer defeated Jay County 6-2, 0-6, 11-9 at No. 1; Rachel Snavely defeated Jay County 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2; and Haley Foster defeated Eastern Hancock 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3. In doubles play, Mallory Cross and Hannah Foster defeated Seton Catholic 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 and Mindy Polston and Lindsey Williams defeated Eastern Hancock 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.

Last Thursday, the Vikings traveled to Greenfield-Central and lost 4-1. For Blue River in singles, Naomi Brewer lost to Lindsey McCord 6-7 (7-9), 3-6 at No. 1; Rachel Snavely lost to Avery Spencer 1-6, 1-6 at No. 2; and Haley Foster lost to Grace Hall 6-2, 3-6, 3-6 at No. 3;

In doubles action, Mindy Polston and Lindsey Williams defeated Haidyn Goodwin and Kaleigh Stephenson 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1, and Mallory Cross and Lexi LaMar lost to Erin Wright and Aly Proper 3-6, 4-6 at No. 2. In junior varsity play, Gracie Beihl and Hannah Baker won 8-6.

Last Wednesday, the Vikings defeated visiting Hagerstown 5-0. In singles play for Blue River, Naomi Brewer defeated Maddie Moore 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1; Rachel Snavely defeated Annah Goss 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; and Haley Foster defeated Brooklyn LaMar 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3.

In doubles action, Mindy Polston and Lindsey Willams defeated Lanie McClanahan and Alyssa Richardson 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, and Mallory Cross and Lexi LaMar defeated Alyssa Richardson and Kyndall Burris 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. In junior varsity play, Ashley Ooten lost 5-8 and Gracie Beihl and Hannah Baker won 8-6. Host Blue River lost to Winchester Tuesday, May 8. In singles for the Vikings, Naomi Brewer lost to Mariah Roberts 2-6, 1-6 at No. 1; Rachel Snavely defeated Brianna Bogue 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2; and Haley Foster defeated Kate Hendrickson 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3;

In doubles Mindy Polston and Lindsey Williams lost to Riley Helms and Stacy Cox 3-6, 4-6 at No. 1, and Mallory Cross and Lexi LaMar lost to Kate Riggin and Lindsey Schroder 0-6, 1-6 at No. 2.

Blue River defends its New Castle sectional championship this week.
