By TRAVIS WEIK - tweik@thecouriertimes.com

Registration is still open for the 2018 New Castle Summer Tennis Camp.

The four-day camp is already on track to beat out last year’s numbers. Camp Director Curt Huntley is also the New Castle High School assistant tennis coach. Huntley took over the summer camp two years ago and has watched the numbers grow.

“There were 27 last year and 26 have already signed up,” Huntley said Tuesday.

The summer tennis camp takes place in the New Castle High School Tennis Center, to the west of the Fieldhouse. Camp starts Wednesday, June 20 and wraps up Saturday, June 23. Each day is broken into different time slots for different age groups.

Kindergarten through third grade will get lessons from 8-9 a.m. Fourth and fifth grade have the 9-10 a.m. hour. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade tennis campers will take the courts from 10:15-11:45 a.m. each day. High school students (grades nine through 12) will have the evening slot from 5:30-7 p.m.

All tennis campers will come back to the courts from 10 a.m. to noon on the final day of camp for a fun game day, Huntley said.

The summer tennis camp is $40 for the first child and $20 for each additional child in the family. Huntley will be joined as camp coach by some special guest coaches from high schools across the state.

Guest tennis instructors include United States Tennis Association Director of Junior Tennis Chad Docktor, Zionsville High School Boys Head Coach Earl Allen, Ben Hamm, Kyle Millbee, Luke Dippel, David Bennett and Jack Hiatt.

Huntley played with some of the guest instructors while he was at Marian University and plays with others in a statewide league.

Huntley said local students can continue registering for the day camp until June 20. Checks should be payable to “New Castle Tennis.”

Huntley is also currently looking for New Castle students going into sixth, seventh or eighth grade who is interested in playing tennis for the New Castle Middle School team during the 2018 fall season.

The summer tennis camp and middle school team is open to boys and girls.
