New Castle 14s romp past Maconaquah

C-T Staff Report

LOGANSPORT — The talented New Castle Babe Ruth League Baseball 14-year-old All-Star Team improved its record to 2-0 in the state tournament by pounding Maconaquah 16-2 in five innings Monday evening.

New Castle faced the Kokomo Knights Wednesday night for its third game in four days.

There wasn’t much suspense in Monday night’s contest. New Castle was the home team on the scoreboard and tallied three runs in the bottom of the first inning, four in the second, six in the third, and three more in the fourth to lead 16-0 after four, and Maconaquah pushed across a pair of relatively meaningless runs in the top of the fifth inning to account for the final score.

Corbin Malott was the winning pitcher for New Castle, hurling three innings of one-hit baseball while walking three batters and striking out five. Kody Smitherman performed the mop-up duty for New Castle, tossing the final two innings and giving up two runs and a hit while striking out four Maconaquah batters.

Archer was the losing pitcher for Maconaquah, throwing the first 1 2/3 innings and giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits, walking two, and striking out two. Three other pitchers combined to hurl the remaining 2 1/3 innings and allowed the rest.

New Castle banged out 13 hits in the game and walked four times in producing the 16 runs. Eli Cooper led the hit parade with three safeties, scored three runs, and had an RBI. Kyler Sears had two hits and scored three times, and Bryce Jenkins had two hits and scored once.

Nick Burns was the big RBI man for New Castle with four, scored three times, and had a hit. Dawson Scottt had two RBI and a run and a hit apiece, and Carson Smith had two RBI and a hit. Also for the Green and White, Malott scored two runs and had a RBI, Traye Miller had a run and RBI apiece, Smitherman had a run, hit, and RBI apiece, and Garrett Rusch had a hit and scored a run, and Ryan Holcomb had a hit.

Cooper, Scott, and Burns hit doubles and Malott had a sacrifice fly.

For Maconaquah, S. Childress had the only hit and RBI and Z. Humbert and Barnes scored the two runs.
