Library bringing fantastical 'Yule Ball' to life

By TRAVIS WEIK - tweik@thecouriertimes.com

It is Christmas tradition at Hogwarts, the famous wizarding school, to celebrate the holiday season with a dance.

The New Castle-Henry County Public Library is bringing that tradition to town next week with their very own Harry Potter Yule Ball.

The free event is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 in the library auditorium.

J.K. Rowling’s first novel, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” debuted in the United States in 1998.

NCHCPL Librarian Krystal Stanich, a big fan of the series, wanted to make sure New Castle got one good Harry Potter event in before the end of the year to celebrate the 20th anniversary.

Stanich attended a Yule Ball in Indianapolis a few months ago and thought it’d be fun to host one here. She reached out to local readers through the NCHCPL Facebook page to gauge interest.

“The responses were crazy. I couldn’t believe how many people responded and reacted within hours of the post,” she said.

Nearly 30 people have registered for the event online at nchcpl.evanced.info/signup/Calendar.

The Yule Ball is part of NCHCPL’s adult programming, so attendees must be 18 or older. There is no cost to attend, however, registration is required online or by calling the library at 765-529-0362.

“We have big plans to decorate the auditorium for the night,” Stanich said. “I don’t want to spoil the surprise, though, so I’ll just say everyone will have to see for themselves.”

The magical evening includes instruction on waltzing and Harry Potter-themed music, along with snacks and drinks from the story of The Boy Who Lived.

Guests to the Yule Ball are also encouraged to dress up as their favorite Harry Potter character.

Indianapolis-based cosplayer Kari Lewis – a specialist in portraying “Harry Potter” character Hermione Granger – will be the special guest judge for the night. First, second and third place costume contest winners will receive Harry Potter-themed prizes.
