Riz's Roundball Picks Week 2 (Dec. 6-8)

By DAVID RISLEY - drisley@thecouriertimes.com

I was 12-3 in my predictions last week. I missed both New Castle boys games and the Knightstown boys loss in overtime.

Larry Keisling, missing only the two Trojan losses, was 13-2 in Week 1 to beat my record, and another person tied my mark.

In Week 2 of the Roundball Picks contest, we have four high school girls games, nine high school boys games, and two men’s college basketball games on the docket. Good luck to you on your predictions.

Girls High School Basketball Games

Game 1: Blue River Valley at Knightstown (Thurs.)

The Viking girls will make it a sweep of their Henry County opponents this regular season (except for New Castle, which they don’t play) with the victory over the host Panthers.

Game 2: Shelbyville at New Castle (Fri.)

The Trojan girls always seem to play well against the Golden Bears and Friday shouldn’t be any different. New Castle wins.

Game 3: Tri at Shenandoah (Fri.)

The Titan girls are playing much better than they were earlier in the season, but the Raiders are at home and I think they’ll prevail.

Game 4: Cowan at Blue River Valley (Fri.)

The Viking girls are rolling right now and will get the victory over the Blackhawks.

Boys High School Basketball Games

Game 5: Shelbyville at New Castle (Fri.)

The Golden Bears’ only loss has been in overtime at Columbus North. If the Trojans shoot well, they will win. I predict the shooting woes of this past weekend will subside and New Castle will outscore Shelbyville.

Game 6: Tri at Shenandoah (Fri.)

The Class A Titans just don’t have the firepower right now to stay with the Class 2A state-ranked Raiders. Shenandoah will win.

Game 7: Cowan at Blue River Valley (Fri.)

The host Vikings will pick up the MEC victory against the winless Blackhawks.

Game 8: Union County at Hagerstown (Fri.)

The visiting Patriots won in overtime at Knightstown, so I think they’ll edge the host Tigers, who will have had 13 days off between games.

Game 9: Knightstown at Cambridge City Lincoln (Fri.)

The Panthers will travel east on U.S. 40 and pick up the TEC victory against the host Golden Eagles.

Game 10: New Castle vs. Brownsburg at Southport (Sat.)

The Bulldogs are 2-2 with the two losses at Crispus Attucks and to national power LaPorte LaLumiere on a neutral floor. The Trojans will fall to Brownsburg.

Game 11: Rushville at Blue River Valley (Sat.)

The Lions are winless, but both losses were to Class 4A teams. Since the Vikings are at home, I pick them to edge Rushville.

Game 12: Wapahani at Knightstown (Sat.)

This is the fourth straight road game for the Raiders, who are 3-0 at this time. I predict Wapahani will defeat the host Panthers.

Game 13: Daleville at Tri (Sat.)

The Broncos are 1-3 at this time. This is a winnable game for the host Titans, but I predict Daleville to venture to Lewisville and come away with the win.

Men’s College Basketball Games

Game 14: Maryland at Purdue (Thurs.)

This game is in Mackey, so I pick the Boilermakers to defeat the visiting Terrapins.

Game 15: Notre Dame at UCLA (Sat.)

Steve Alford told me over the summer that this will be the tallest Bruins team he has coached and the game is in Pauley, so I predict UCLA will beat the visiting Fighting Irish.
