Free admission to Conner Prairie on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Courier-Times Staff Report

Admission to Conner Prairie is free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21 as the museum invites visitors to celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the importance of peaceful protesting.

Special events and activities are planned throughout the day, including theatrical performances, family games, archaeology activities, art and more.

Programming that day will include "Archaeology: Black, White or Both." Museum visitors will try to see if they can tell which artifacts might have come from a historic African American community, a White community or would have appeared in either community.

Like Dr. King, visitors to Connor Prairie can share their dreams for the future at the Tree of Dreams.

The museum's Anything Can Happen Theater will focus on "Freedom Summer: 1964," using a box of props to lead younger guests in imaginative play.

Conner Prairie will also feature "Mr. Daniel's Music," allowing visitors to hear classic songs of protest from the 1960s to contemporary.

The day will also feature aviatix Willa Brown. Brown started her career as a teacher after attending Indiana State Teachers College. Looking for greater challenges, she went on to become the first African-American woman to become a licensed pilot and the first woman in the US to be both a licensed pilot and mechanic. She went on to train some of the Tuskegee Airmen, along with running for Congress and working as an activist.

There is also a gallery of "Non-violent Protest, Past and Present" and a chance for young learners to draw a picture, write a poem and share with others what they would do to protest an injustice.
