C-T STAFF REPORT

CONNERSVILLE—The New Castle High School gymnastics team opened the season Tuesday night with a victory in a quadrangular meet in Connersville's Spartan Bowl.

The Trojans placed first in the meet with 96.375 points followed, in order, by Connersville 94.325, Pendleton Heights 56.575, and Union County 30.75.

In Vault competition for New Castle, Samantha Ward placed first, Riley Smith third, Tristan Barr fourth and Bailey Guffey seventh.

In the Uneven Bars for the Trojans, Samantha Ward finished first, Tristan Barr third, Emma Troxell fourth and Riley Smith sixth.

Balance Beam traditionally has been the most difficult event for the New Castle girls to master. Tuesday at Connersville, Emma Troxell placed fourth, Samantha Ward sixth and Caitlin Shunneson seventh.

In the Floor Exercise for the Trojans, Riley Smith finished third, Taylor Snell fourth and Caitlin Shunneson seventh.

The All-Around competition includes scores from all four events. In that for New Castle, Samantha Ward placed second and Bailey Guffey was seventh.

"The start of a season is usually pretty difficult," New Castle Coach Tina Hittson stated. "Beam is where the nerves really show and it was challenging for us tonight. The first meet allows you to see the things that will work in routines and things that might need changed. Vault was a positive note this evening with all of our girls scoring in the eights or higher. We had well-rounded scoring with many girls contributing to the team score."

The Trojan gymnasts entertain Rushville Monday evening for their first home meet of the season.
