Trojan swimmers finish second at Anderson

By JASON KUBICK of NCHS - drisley@thecouriertimes.com

ANDERSON—Fresh off eighth-place finishes at last Saturday's Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet, the New Castle High School girls and boys swimming teams took to the road again Tuesday evening when they traveled to Anderson High School to face the host Indians.

Anderson proved to be a good test and won both the girls' side of the meet 116-49 and the boys' side of the meet 126-53.

Girls Meet

The New Castle girls swam well Tuesday night in their loss to the Indians. The team had many good swims on the night, leading to some good placements.

Rylan Blessinger (50 Free and 100 Butterfly), Lylah Hutson (100 Free and 100 Backstroke) and Payton Plank (200 IM and 500 Free) placed second in each of their individual events. Bailey Smith placed third in the 100 Breaststroke, and Hannah Hamacher also placed third in the 200 Freestyle.

In the relays, the 200 Medley Relay team of Plank, Smith, Blessinger and Hutson placed second. The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Blessinger, Hamacher, Plank, and Hutson also placed second, and the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Hamacher, Smith, Mackenzie Smoot, and Quincy Kopp placed third.

"We swam a lot of 'off' events, and the girls swam really well," New Castle Coach Jason Kubick stated. "Coming back first meet from conference can sometimes be really good or really bad, and today I was really happy with how they swam. They all had the times we were looking for in their events and we are going to keep building on that moving towards sectionals."

Boys Meet

The New Castle boys swim team lost to a very deep Anderson team Tuesday night. Even in a loss, the Trojans swam well.

New Castle was led by Connor Griffey with a first-place finish in the 100 Backstroke and third place in the 50 Freestyle. Ben Hall had a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 Butterfly and 500 Freestyle.

Luke Atterson had a second-place finish in the 200 Freestyle and third place in the 100 Breaststroke. Jackson Criswell and Garrett Rusch each brought home a second-place finish in the 100 Freestyle and Diving, respectively.

In the relays for the Trojans, the Medley Relay team of Griffey, Aidan Sipes, Hall, and Criswell finished second. The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Andrew Lacey, Atterson, Criswell, and Hall also placed second, and the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Sipes, Griffey, Lacey and Atterson placed third.

"Much like the girls, the boys swam a lot of 'off' events," Coach Kubick added. "We like to give the kids a break from swimming the same things repeatedly. The boys swam really well and had good times in their off events. I really like what they showed Tuesday. Swimming things they normally don't can be frustrating, but it can also be a fun break for the kids. They all did a great job."

New Castle hosts Pendleton Heights Tuesday. It is the final home meet and Senior Night, as well.
