Riz's Roundball Picks Week 9 (Feb. 7-9)

By DAVID RISLEY - drisley@thecouriertimes.com

I was 10-3 in my predictions in Week 8. I guess miracles do happen (in a way) as IU beat Michigan State because the Spartans were lousy at shooting free throws. I missed that pick, and so did every contestant.

Through Week 8 (118 games), I have a 95-23 record and lead the contest by five games. However, because I am an employee of the C-T, I can’t win it. Among the top five contestants, Jim Jeffries leads with a 90-28 record, followed by Larry Keisling 88-30, Charles Drury 87-31, and Lisa Knotts and Chad Niccum are tied for fourth with 85-33 records apiece.

Because two boys high school basketball game were postponed due to weather last week, we have 17 picks on the docket for this week.

Not all of the girls high school regional matchups had been set at press time, but in Week 9 we have seven high school girls regional games, seven boys high school regular season games, and three men’s college basketball games.

Good luck to you on your predictions.

Boys High School Basketball Games

Game 1: Blue River Valley at Centerville (Fri.)

I predict the visiting Vikings will pick up the road win over the Bulldogs.

Game 2: New Castle at Delta (Fri.)

The visiting Trojans can win this game (and I hope they do), but I predict the Eagles will prevail.

Game 3: Lapel at Shenandoah (Fri.)

If the Raiders can defeat Mt. Vernon, I think they can beat the visiting Bulldogs, and will do so.

Game 4: Tri at Northeastern (Fri.)

The Titan boys will absorb another loss to the host Knights in Fountain City.

Game 5: Hagerstown at Lapel (Sat.)

The Tigers gave Delta a good scrap at home a couple of weeks ago, but this game is on the road. The host Bulldogs will nip Hagerstown.

Game 6: Knightstown at North Decatur (Sat.)

The Panthers will make the trip to Sandusky and fall to the host Chargers.

Game 7: Shenandoah at Randolph Southern (Sat.)

The Raider boys will go on the road to Lynn and defeat the host Rebels at The Battlefield.

Girls High School Regional Semifinal Games (all games Sat.)

Game 8: North Central (Farmersburg) vs. Greenwood Christian Academy at Southwestern-Shelby (A)

In this toss-up game, the 16-10 Cougars will defeat the 16-8 Thunderbirds.

Game 9: Covenant Christian vs. Western Boone at Speedway (2A)

The 18-8 Warriors will defeat the 16-9 Stars in this one.

Game 10: Triton Central vs. Winchester at Speedway (2A)

This could be one of the better games of the day. The 23-1 Tigers’ only loss was to Class 2A defending state champion Central Noble in New Castle Nov. 24, so I think they’ll defeat the 23-3 Golden Falcons, last year’s 2A state runner-up.

Game 11: Vincennes Lincoln vs. Gibson Southern at Charlestown (3A)

Both the Alices and Titans are 23-3 and Vincennes won the first meeting in November. The two schools, located only about 35 miles apart, will travel across the state to meet again and the Alices will prevail once more.

Game 12: Danville vs. Northview at Danville (3A)

The tourney host 20-5 Warriors will defeat the 16-9 Knights in this game.

Game 13: Zionsville vs. Homestead at Kokomo (4A)

The 24-3 Spartans will beat the 18-8 Eagles, but it will be a close game.

Game 14: Mt. Vernon (Fortville) vs. Ben Davis at Decatur Central (4A)

I’m picking the HHC 20-5 Marauders to defeat the 16-8 Giants on the southwest side of Indianapolis.

Men’s College Basketball Games

Game 15: Iowa at Indiana (Thurs.)

I’m betting the Hoosiers’ upset win at MSU will give them a boost and they will beat the visiting Hawkeyes.

Game 16: Western Michigan at Ball State (Sat.)

The fifth and sixth-place teams in the MAC West battle it out, and the host Cardinals will come out on top over the Broncos.

Game 17: Nebraska at Purdue (Sat.)

The Boilermakers are undefeated at home and won’t lose this game to the visiting Cornhuskers.
