By TINA HITTSON of NCHS

INDIANAPOLIS - The New Castle High School gymnastics team traveled to the state capital Saturday for a meet with host Roncalli and three other teams with incomplete squads and finished second to the host Rebels in the meet.

Team scores were Roncalli 100.925, New Castle 96.55, Indianapolis Scecina 63.45, Pendleton Heights 61.875, and Indianapolis Lutheran 30.725

Even though New Castle lost for the first time, it improved its record to 12-1 in competition. The Trojans were short-handed on Saturday with many athletes involved in multiple activities. Even so, New Castle stepped up its performance in placing second to Roncalli.

In Vault for the Trojans, Samantha Ward placed first, Bailey Guffey sixth, Taylor Snell seventh, and Sarah Maddy eighth. On Uneven Bars for New Castle, Samantha Ward finished first and Emma Troxell fifth.

On Balance Beam for the Trojans, Samantha Ward placed second, Emma Troxell fifth, Sarah Maddy seventh, and Bailey Guffey ninth. In junior varsity Balance Beam competition, Mackenzie Lewis was first and Elizabeth Guffey second.

For New Castle in Floor Exercise, Samantha Ward finished third, Macie Baty sixth, Taylor Snell seventh, and Bailey Guffey and Mackenzie Lewis tied for eighth.

In the All-Around competition, Samantha Ward placed first and Bailey Guffey was eighth.

“I was very pleased with our performance today,” Trojan Coach Hittson remarked. “I believe overall we had one of our best meets of the season with everyone digging deep to pull in points for our team score. Samantha Ward led the way by winning the All-Around with a score of 35.475 and winning both vault and bars. Bailey Guffey, Taylor Snell, Sarah Maddy, Emma Troxell, Mackenzie Lewis, Macie Baty, and Lizzy Guffey all contributed to the team performance.”

The next competition for the New Castle gymnasts is this Saturday at the Bloomington North Invitational.
