8 local grapplers to contend for state finals berths

1 / 2
Shenandoah’s Hayden Lohrey (top) definitely has the advantage over Milan’s Jacob Rohrig in last Saturday’s championship match at 160 pounds in the Richmond wrestling regional. Lohrey will attempt to make it back to the state finals when he competes in Saturday’s semi-state at New Castle Fieldhouse.

Shenandoah’s undefeated Silas Allred (top) has Richmond’s Blaine Richards close to a pin in the 195-pound class during last Saturday’s Richmond wrestling regional. Allred hopes to qualify again for the state finals when competing in Saturday’s semi-state at New Castle Fieldhouse.

Almost every wrestling fan from around Indiana looks forward to the IHSAA state finals of the sport, which will be at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Feb. 15-16 this year.

But to get there, every grappler has to wade through the gauntlet at one of four semi-states held this Saturday, and eight local wrestlers will do that at New Castle Fieldhouse beginning at 9 a.m.

Each of the weight classes has 16 wrestlers contending to be the champion, but one doesn’t necessarily have to win the title to punch his ticket to Indianapolis. The top four from each weight class will advance to the state finals.

Simply put, a grappler will need to win his first two matches Saturday to sew up a spot in Indianapolis.

Here are Saturday’s first-round match-ups by weight class for our eight local wrestlers in New Castle Fieldhouse. The field here consists of qualifiers from the North Montgomery, Pendleton Heights, Perry Meridian and Richmond regionals.

Traye Owens (New Castle) 44-2 vs. Harrison Hadley (Lapel) 21-5 on mat 3.

138 pounds

152 pounds

160 pounds

182 pounds

Jake Combs (Hagerstown) 35-4 vs. Scott Stanley (Greenfield-Central) 19-19 on mat 2.

195 pounds

Silas Allred (Shenandoah) 27-0 vs. David Garcia (Indianapolis North Central) 15-4 on mat 4.

220 pounds

Robby Pandoli (Tri) 22-5 vs. Andrew Irick (Hamilton Southeastern) 30-1 on mat 2, and Corbin Badger (Shenandoah) 23-9 vs. Drew Webster (North Montgomery) 35-1 on mat 3.

Owens, Lohrey, Combs, and Allred were champions of their weight classes at last Saturday’s Richmond regional.

The cost for an all-session pass is $10 and $8 if a fan wants to attend just the finals session.
