Optimists name winning essayists

High school sophomores Molly Alspaugh, Roland Wong and Nancy Thompson recently won the local Optimist essay contest based on a theme of “When All the World’s Problems are Solved, is Optimism Still Necessary?” All three will be awarded $50 for the honor.

Thompson, daughter of Ron and Donna Thompson, was selected the winner for the Noon Optimists.

Wong, son of Raymond Wong and Anna Lam, was selected as the Breakfast Club’s winner.

Alspaugh, daughter of Jennifer and Jason Alspaugh, is representing the Evening Club.

In addition, their essays have been sent to the district level to be judged along with winners from other Optimist Clubs in the Indiana North district. College scholarships in the amount of $2,500 are available for top winners at the district level.

“All three students did a wonderful job of expressing themselves and reflecting intelligently on this year’s theme,” said local essay chairperson Susan Delay. “As their English teacher in addition to the contest chairperson, I know how students struggled with this year’s topic. The end result of this struggle was students really looked at the topic in depth and used higher level thinking skills to formulate their replies. These students should be quite proud of what they have accomplished.”

The essays were identified by numbers only (not names) when they were judged by three local judges to determine the local winners. There were ten students who entered the contest.
