Red Hot Blues competing in state music finals Saturday

New Castle High School show choir Red Hot Blues has earned an invitation to compete in the Indiana State School Music Association’s Small School State Finals this Saturday, March 16.

The Red Hot Blues will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at Franklin Central High School.

They will compete against Garrett, Jay County, New Palestine, Pendleton Columbia City, Fairfield, Huntington North and Northridge high schools.

The group is returning to the state competition after a fourth place finish in 2018. 

Red Hot Blues has had a busy competition season. On Saturday, they earned Best Band and Grand Champion of the small school division at Lawrence Central.

The season began in January at the Pendleton Heights competition, where they received Best Band and first runner-up. Other competitions were: Franklin High School, Ben Davis (first runner-up) and North Central High School.

Theme of this year’s show is “Secret Agents.” The show’s songs include: Perry Mason theme, Secret Agent Man, Smooth Operator, Writings on the Wall, American Woman, These Boots Are Made for Walkin’, Dude Looks Like a Lady, and Feel It Still.

The ensemble is an extra-curricular group at New Castle High School. It is made up of 36 singers/dancers, 10 band members and 10 stage crew members. The group is under the direction of Alyssa Czartoski and assisted by Judy Hubbard. Choreography is by Caitlin Stevenson with assistance by D.J. Shumaker and Elijah Tyner. Costume designer is Katy Stevenson. Each weekend David Criswell provides the supervision of many parents and students, who manipulate the set on and off the many stages.

Red Hot Blues will also perform their state finalist show during the annual Show Choir Spectacular at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Bundy auditorium. The event will also feature the New Castle Middle School swing choir Red Hot Revolution, under the direction of Alyssa Czartoski, and the New Castle High School jazz choir Swing Street Singers, under the direction Matthew Hurst.
