Birch Bayh dies at age 91

INDIANAPOLIS —Former U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh died Thursday, March 14, from pneumonia. He was 91.

Bayh accomplished many things in his political career, including authoring the 25th and 26th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution and Title IX to the Higher Education Act.

Governor Eric J. Holcomb offered the following statement regarding Bayh’s passing:

“Birch Bayh was a trailblazer who dedicated himself to improving the lives of all Hoosiers. His remarkable legislative and personal legacy transformed the country and will live on for years to come. I ask Hoosiers around the state to join me and Janet in honoring his incredible service and by keeping the Bayh family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Holcomb also directed flags across the state to be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of Bayh’s funeral, which has not yet been announced.

Holcomb also asked businesses and residents to lower their flags to half-staff as well to honor former U.S. Sen. Bayh.
