Shenandoah schools placed on alert

By TRAVIS WEIK - tweik@thecouriertimes.com

MIDDLETOWN — A threat to a Muncie business had Shenandoah schools on high alert Wednesday afternoon.

Shenandoah School Corporation Superintendent Ron Green said the schools were placed on preventative lockdown because part of the Muncie threat also mentioned Shenandoah High School.

“The SHS principal, Mr. (Greg) Allen, and our SRO (school resource officer) on duty contacted me and all SSC schools were placed on preventative lockdown,” Green said.

Shenandoah schools also contacted the Henry County Sheriff’s Department and Middletown Police.

“As they always do, our police partners, including our SRO on duty, responded in a timely and professional manner,” Green said. “The police determined the SHS portion of the threat to be credible but not probable.”

Once everyone made sure the school campuses were safe for students and faculty, Green made a school-wide messenger call to let students, staff and parents know the situation.

In his message, Green also asked parents to always report any potential threats to local school officials, local police or the county sheriff. He asked parents to talk with their children about doing the same type reporting, as well.

According to the Muncie Police Department, the situation began when an employee at a Muncie business made comments about possibly shooting up his work.

The man allegedly also mentioned Shenandoah High School in his comments to a co-worker.

The co-worker reported the comments to their supervisor, who then contacted Muncie police.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Department interviewed the man accused of making the comments.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, the comments were made some time in the past and there was no current threat to Shenandoah students, staff or buildings.

No arrests had been made Thursday in connection to the possible threats.
