Goody's to become Gordmans this summer

By TRAVIS WEIK - tweik@thecouriertimes.com

The anchor store of New Castle Plaza is getting a new name in June.

Goody’s will close for a short time June 15 while the clothing store transforms into Gordmans.

The Goody’s brand has been part of Stages Stores. Stage Stores acquired several dozen Gordmans stores and a distribution center in 2017.

Stage Stores spokesperson Jenny Clifton verified the New Castle store will be converted to a Gordmans during the brief closure.

“Stage Stores is opening 38 Gordmans stores across the country this March, and opening an additional 36 stores this summer, and New Castle is one of the summer location openings,” Clifton said.

Stage Stores closed six other Indiana Goody’s stores in late February and early March so they could reopen as Gordmans in those communities.

Goody’s offers apparel for men and women, accessories, shoes and housewares. The department store is a successor to a chain of clothing retailers once based in Knoxville, Tenn.

Stage Stores describes Gordmans as an “off-price store.”

According to Forbes, off-price retailers generally offer high quality goods at cheaper prices than other retail locations. These branded or designer items may be end-of-season, overruns, closeouts or irregular items.

New Castle’s Label Shopper, along with Burlington Coat Factory, Ross Stores and TJ Maxx, are other examples of off-price stores.

The New Castle Goody’s is set to close June 15. The new Gordmans store is scheduled to open in late June.

Stage Stores also operates stores under the Stage, Bealls, Palais Royal and Peebles.
