Trojan golfers finish second at Yorktown

YORKTOWN — The New Castle High School boys golf team, ranked No. 20 in the preseason poll, opened its 2019 regular season campaign Saturday in the Yorktown Invitational at The Players Club and finished second to a strong No. 6 Noblesville team among all the squads competing on the day.

The Millers had a team score of 300 and the Trojans came in with 316.

New Castle freshman Derek Tabor led the way for New Castle by shooting an even-par 72. Also for the Trojans, Brady Wheeler shot a 74, Spencer Stewart and Dillon Bergum shot 85 apiece, and Nolan Beam shot an 88.

“This was a pretty good day for us being our first match,” New Castle Coach John Burdsall stated, “as 316 is the exact score we shot in last year’s regional at the end of the season. So, knowing that we will improve as the season goes on is a positive for our team.”

Burdsall was particularly pleased with freshman Tabor, senior Wheeler, and some other members of his team.

“Derek Tabor shot even-par and really played great in his first high school varsity meet,” Burdsall remarked. “He was very solid from tee to green. Brady Wheeler joined Tabor shooting a great round, really playing well with just one bad hole. Senior Spencer Stewart and freshman Dillon Bergum also did well except for a few bad holes. We still have some parts of our games that need polishing up, but we will continue to work hard in practice on those areas.”

The Trojans host Muncie Burris and Eastern Hancock today at Westwood Golf Club for their only match this week.
