Kappa, Kappa, Kappa Associate Chapter met on Monday, April 1 at the New Castle First Presbyterian Church to celebrate 70 years of being chartered in New Castle.

On April 4, 1949 a group of women gathered at the home of Mrs. William Clift for dinner and Installation of a new Tri Kappa Associate Chapter. Charter members included Dorothy Allison, Merle Bitner, Elizabeth Blemker, Phoebe Brammer, Janet Cleveland, Pansy Redd, Fern Saint, Edna Maxim, Dorothy Scotten and Helen Magner.

Linda Madison shared news articles and pictures in old scrapbooks recalling the day the charter and chapter were installed. Festive table decorations with the birthday theme enhanced the room for the special birthday festivities. Delicious lemon cupcakes were served in celebration of the event.

The program for the evening was given by Berniece Stacey on the history and events at the Guyer Opera House in Lewisville. The opera house has been in the same building since 1898 starting out as a gaslight theater where vaudeville shows and other events of the era took place.

Berniece shared how the areas of the Opera House were created and developed over the years to make them what they are today. The big change in the Opera House took place in 1988 when remodeling of the upstairs began and 18 months later was completed. Having the upstairs usable added more seating and a stage to better accommodate the actors and an audience.

There are a lot of areas that still need work, such as a new curtain, new stage floor, sound system improvements and new lighting. She reviewed upcoming plays and dinners to take place in 2019. Berniece added that the actors for the plays were not just from Henry County. Several have come from other counties to participate in the plays and support the Opera House.

Flyers were passed out of upcoming events for 2019. Members agreed it would be very worthwhile to travel to Lewisville for events at the opera house. A donation was collected for the opera house.

President Joanna Hesher conducted the business meeting.

Susan Denison shared information about the Farmers Market to start in May. In the beginning, it will be located on Tucker Real Estate parking lot on the corner of Main Street and Race Street.

Joanna announced the Tri Kappa State Convention will be in Indianapolis on April 30. The active chapter will have representatives attending.

Joanna presented the slate of officers for 2019-2021. They are: President Gayle Anderson; Secretary Connie Loveless; Treasurers Joyce Bennett and Pamela Shortridge. These officers will be installed at the May 6 meeting. Gayle asked members to sign up for committees for the coming year.

Nancy Renner will present the Unselfish Service Award to a deserving senior at New Castle High School’s recognition program.

Joanna thanked the committee of Jaci Hadsell, Judy Hubbard, Nancy Renner and Beth Schulte for the lovely decorations and delicious cupcakes.

The final meeting of the program year will at 6 p.m. Monday, May 6 at New Castle First Presbyterian Church.
