Potential high school girls tennis sectional opponents Shenandoah and New Castle faced each other Thursday evening at the NCHS courts, once again the site of this year’s sectional.

The Raiders swept all three singles flights and won one in doubles to defeat the host Trojans 4-1. Shenandoah improved to 3-1 for the season while New Castle slipped to 1-3.

Raider Coach John Rhodes got Morgan Nation back into the starting lineup and seems to have solidified his team. Trojan Coach Jennifer Kelsik continues to experiment with her players at various positions other than at No. 1 doubles.

Shenandoah won all three singles flights in straight sets. Morgan Nation defeated Caitlin Shunneson 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, Sophie Wilkinson shut out Tori Zizert 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, and Abby Rector defeated Kylee Calciano 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

Only one flight went to three sets, and that was at No. 1 doubles. The Raiders’ Letha Wilson and Carly Allen lost the first set 3-6 to the New Castle duo of juniors Abby Hamilton and Emily Scott, but bounced back to win the next two sets 7-5, 6-4.

The Trojans got their lone point at No. 2 doubles, which also was pretty close. New Castle’s Darby Williams and Emily Thurlow bested Shenandoah’s Eden Powell and Abby Decker 7-5, 6-4.

The Trojans travel to Knightstown Monday to face the host Panthers while the Raiders return to action Tuesday when they host Alexandria.
