Titans beat Golden Bears to remain undefeated


PARKER CITY—The Class A No. 3 Tri High School varsity softball team went on the road Tuesday evening and defeated host Monroe Central 13-2 to improve to 9-0 for the season.

The Titans’ Chloe Gentry got her eighth win in the circle while not giving up an earned run in the game. She struck out 10 batters in the Golden Bear lineup on her way to the win.

Each team scored a run in the first inning to get things started on the evening. Gentry walked to lead off the game and Cheyenne Lee laid down a sacrifice bunt to get Gentry to second base. Gentry then stole third and the throw was errant to allow her to score.

Monroe Central came to the plate in the bottom of the frame and the second batter Gentry faced got due to a throwing error by the shortstop. She moved to third on a hit by Barga, who stole second to put both runners in scoring position. Page Willen hit into a fielder’s choice to score the run and tie the game.

In the top of the second, Tri tacked on another run. After one out, Taylor Craft walked but was forced out going to second on a fielder’s choice by Kennedy Peggs. Peggs advanced to second on a Kalie Barber walk. On an errant throw back to the pitcher, Peggs broke for third and was hit in the back with the throw. That caused the ball to roll away allowing Peggs to score the only run of the inning, giving Tri a 2-1 lead after two.

In the third inning, Lee got on with one out on an error by the pitcher. Kaley Harrison advanced Lee with a single to center field. With runners at first and second, a wild pitch advanced both Lee and Harrison one base. Abi Busby then hit a triple to right field to score both runners for a 4-1 Titan lead.

Tri scored three more runs in the fourth inning to extend its advantage. Peggs led off the inning with a walk. Barber singled and both runners a advanced on a wild pitch. Gentry grounded to third and Peggs was thrown out trying to score at the plate. This put Gentry and Barber at first and third.

Gentry stole second base. Lee hit a single to right center field on the next pitch to score both runners. Lee advanced to second on the throw to home. Harrison then hit a single to right center field to score Lee and that ended the scoring for Tri in the inning.

In the fifth inning, Busby and Craft led off the inning with consecutive singles and advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Peggs hit a two-RBI single down the left field line to score both runners. The Titans were unable to plate any more runs in the inning.

Monroe Central scored their second unearned run of the game in the last of the sixth. With two outs, a batter got aboard on a throwing error that went into the dugout allowing the runner to advance to second. Barga singled to center field to score the runner for the Golden Bears’ last run of the game.

Tri tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game away. Busby led off the inning with a double to left center field. Busby advanced on a groundout by Craft. Peggs then hit a single up the middle to score Busby. Peggs went to second on a passed ball to put herself in scoring position.

Barber walked and Morgan Richey singled in Peggs and the Titans still had runners at first and second. Gentry grounded to short who flipped the ball to third base for the second out of the inning. Both runners stole their respective bases and Cheyenne Lee singled them to make the score 13-2.
