Grocery delivery service expands to Henry County

By TRAVIS WEIK - tweik@thecouriertimes.com

Folks from New Castle and the surrounding communities can have organic produce dropped off at their doorsteps now, thanks to the Downtown Farm Stand in Muncie.

Husband-and-wife duo Dave and Sara Ring started selling their homegrown vegetables at farmers’ markets more than a decade ago.

Like many family farms, the Rings sometimes found themselves with leftover wares after the market closed for the week.

“We kept saying that we wished there was a store where we could drop off the rest of the food so we could get back to farming,” Dave said.

They found that place in 2006. After a year of renovations, Downtown Farm Stand opened its doors and gave customers access to food from 40 regional organic farms.

The business at 125 E. Main St. also added a deli where the meat, bread and trimmings are all made from scratch.

The Rings decided they could go a step further and make it even easier to get fresh produce to families in East Central Indiana. So in 2010, the Downtown Farm Stand started offering weekly home delivery to folks who signed up for the service.

Expanding into the delivery realm was like going home for Dave. His great-grandparents owned and operated the Crescent Grocery, which delivered to their customers using a horse-drawn wagon.

The Farm Stand delivers to Albany, Muncie, Yorktown, Eaton, Daleville, Chesterfield, Selma, Desoto, Losantville, Dunkirk, Alexandria and Anderson.

Downtown Farm Stand now offers their home delivery service to New Castle residents, too.

Once customers have signed up for the home delivery service, Downtown Farm Stand will bring an insulated cooler right to their door on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

There’s not even a charge for the deliveries, as long as the order is at least $35.

Customers can just leave their empty cooler from the week before out and Downtown Farm Stand will change it out for one that’s chock-full of fresh produce.

Downtown Farm Stand’s web site (www.downtownfarmstand.com) lets customers peruse the weekly specials and customize what’s going to be in their bin that week. Or, if their pantry is still full, there’s always the option to skip a week.

“You can search a whole grocery store’s selection every week,” Dave Ring said, adding that he is looking forward to connecting Henry County farmers to Downtown Farm Stand customers.

“We could come to town to drop off orders and turn that into a produce pick up at the same time,” Dave said.

Local farmers can email downtownfarmstand@gmail.com for information about becoming a produce supplier for the Muncie market. For more information about the company and their grocery delivery service, visit www.downtownfarmstand.com.
