G. Peggy VanMatre, age 94, of Greenfield, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at Springhurst Legacy in Greenfield. She was born on April 12, 1926 in Dandridge, Tennessee and was the daughter of Cline and Daisy (Miller) Cox.
Peggy graduated from high school in Dandridge Tennessee in 1944 and graduated from nursing school at Fort Sanders School of Nursing in 1948. Her favorite part of nursing was always working with babies and children. She ended her career working at the New Castle Clinic, retiring in 1984.
She married H. Richard VanMatre May 14,1949. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling, bridge, playing golf, and spending time with family. They spent winters in Florida after retirement. They attended First Methodist Church. She was active in choir and Women’s Circle. They had many friends at church.
She is survived by two daughters, Vicki (husband, Steve) Emmons of Greenfield and Nancy (husband, Phil) Roberts of Fremont; two granddaughters, Meghann (husband, Mark) Ayers of Fishers and Allison (husband, Justin) Payton of Fort Wayne; two great-grandchildren, Hudson and Celia Ayers of Fishers; brother-in-law, Donald (wife, Loretta) VanMatre; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; two sisters, Helen Maurer and Leatrice Parker and brother, John Cox.
Due to COVID restrictions, there will be no calling. Private funeral service will take place on Saturday at 11:00 A.M., at First United Methodist Church, 1324 Church Street, New Castle, Indiana with burial to follow at South Mound Cemetery in New Castle.
