Class 4A Sectional 9

In opening-round action Tuesday night, Mt. Vernon (Fortville) defeated Richmond in three sets 25-8, 25-16, 25-16 and Pendleton Heights swept past Greenfield-Central in three sets 25-13, 25-12, 25-11 to move on to face each other in Saturday’s first semifinal match.

Opening-round action continues tonight when Muncie Central takes on defending 4A state champion and tourney-host Yorktown in the first match at 6 p.m., followed by New Castle facing Anderson in the second match at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Class 2A Sectional 41

The opening round of this sectional at Union County High School occurs today when the tourney-host Patriots face Eastern Hancock at 6 p.m., followed by Knightstown taking on Northeastern at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Class A Sectional 56

Opening-round action in this sectional at Union (Modoc) High School continues today when Randolph Southern faces Blue River Valley at 6 p.m., followed by Cambridge City Lincoln taking on Union City at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Youth Basketball League sign-ups

After a year’s absence because of COVID-19 precautions, the New Castle Evening Optimist/Henry County YMCA Youth Basketball League for both boys and girls will resume for the 2021-22 season.

Any boy or girl in New Castle, Henry County, and the nearby surrounding area is eligible to join and participate.

There will be teams in the Boys Division for fifth and sixth graders, and teams in the Girls Division for fourth, fifth, and sixth-graders.

Sign-ups now are being conducted at the Henry County YMCA and Sports Corner Elite. A waiver must be signed at the time of registration.

The cost to participate is $75 per player, which includes a uniform, league games, and the postseason tournament. Financial assistance is available if needed.

There will be a mandatory evaluation of all players before coaches draft their teams. One parent per player is allowed during the evaluation.

The Girls’ draft is Tuesday, Oct. 19 at the YMCA. Fourth and fifth-graders will be evaluated at 5:30 p.m., with sixth-graders evaluated at 6:30 p.m.

The Boys’ draft is Thursday, Oct. 21 at the YMCA. Fifth-graders are evaluated at 5:30 p.m. and sixth-graders at 6:30 p.m.
