The New Castle High School girls tennis team hosted county rival Shenandoah Thursday at the NCHS courts and edged the visiting Raiders 3-2 on a cool and brisk evening.

The Trojans swept all three singles flights to garner the necessary number of points to overcome Shenandoah’s dominance in the two doubles flights.

All flights Thursday were wins in straight sets. New Castle freshman Morley Blessinger bested Raider senior Alexandra Patterson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles; Trojan senior Molly Alspaugh defeated Shenandoah junior Reina Sherman 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles; and New Castle freshman Jaylee Bush topped Raider junior Abby Buskirk 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

As already noted, Shenandoah won both doubles flights with relative ease. Raider seniors Sophie Wilkinson and Morgan Nation remained unbeaten at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over the Trojans’ Kyndal Forsberg and Rileigh Forsberg, while Shenandoah’s No. 2 doubles duo of juniors Hannah Zody and Cori Allen defeated New Castle’s Addi McGowan and Catherine Hannah 6-1, 6-1.

On Wednesday evening, New Castle fell 5-0 at Eastern Hancock.

Morley Blessinger was defeated by Sarah Hardin 0-6, 6-1, 4-6 at No. 1 singles; Gen Davison was defeated by Chloe McCarty 0-6, 1-6 at No, 2 singles; and Jaylee Bush was defeated by Lexi Swanger 0-6, 2-6 at No. 3 singles.

Molly Alspaugh and Kyndal Forsberg were defeated by Edwards and Richmond 2-6, 4-6 at No. 1 doubles; and Sacha Shunneson and Ryleigh Forsberg were defeated by Hardy and Tice 5-7, 1-6 at No. 2 doubles.

In junior varsity action, Payton Dolce was defeated by Faucett 1-8 at No. 1 singles, and Emma Cole won 8-5 over Kingen at No. 2 singles. Cole also won over Fleck 8-1 at No. 3 singles.

Addi McGowan and Catherine Hannah won 8-3 over Ebbert and Cavaletto at No. 1 doubles, and Kyla Hicks and Alana Amman won 8-3 over Broadwater and Garciadiaz at No. 2 doubles.

Also on Wednesday, Shenandoah traveled to Fortville and lost to host Mt. Vernon 4-1.

The Raiders’ lone point came from the No. 1 doubles team of Sophie Wilkinson and Morgan Nation as they won in straight sets 6-1, 7-5.
